A core service of ours has been to provide on-going professional development to rural health professionals. While the service initially focussed on skills training for nurses to support them working in the operating theatre and recovery. This programme has developed to provide a wider, range of education sessions to ensure rural health professionals maintain their individual professional competencies. In the last 10 years more than 35,000 hours of training and education have been provided at more than 35 rural locations throughout New Zealand.

The programme has now grown to include three core areas:

  • Scrub nurse, first assistant,
    circulating and recovery nurse skills

  • Surgical Techniques
  • Diagnostic Skills
  • Advanced Resuscitation

The programmes are suitable for a wide range of health professionals including nurses, GPs, ambulance officers and paramedics, district nurses, aged care workers, medical social workers and almost any other health practitioner.
