To provide Registered Nurses practicing in rural areas of New Zealand with the opportunity to further develop their understanding of the factors that influence the provision and delivery of health care to rural communities.
To provide Registered Nurses with knowledge of the historical, geographic, demographic, cultural, socio-economic and technological factors that influences the provision of rural health care.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Examine the historical, cultural and societal context of rural New Zealand
  • Identify the unique issues that influence the delivery of healthcare to rural communities in New Zealand
  • Discuss the epidemiology of selected prevalent health issues in rural New Zealand
  • Discuss potential strategies and/or models of rural health deliverys
