Big bus takes mobile surgery to neglected rural heartland

I's 8.30am in the north Auckland coastal township of Snells Beach when Joanne Kane and three-year-old son Jude turn up at the local volunteer fire brigade headquarters.

Parked outside on the helipad is an enormous blue articulated bus.

Jude is still dressed in his Spiderman pyjamas and looking a bit sleepy and wary, but his eyes light up when he enters the bus, which seems to expand internally, Tardis-like, into a shining, fully equipped operating theatre inhabited by beings in blue scrubs and masks.
