2008Rural Health Symposium 2008

Held in Wellington early June, the 2008 RHS wa convened by MSS and Dunedine School of Medicine's Te Waipounamu Rural Health Unit. A key development in this year's summit was the development of a working party by the managers of 24 rural hospitals to represent rural hospitals' views and concerns to the wider New Zealand public and the government.

Technology and its potential applications in rural healthcare featured highly at the summit. Rural GPs, who in the past travelled with their patients to assist in theatre, could now join them virtually thanks to developments in video-conferencing. This was demonstrated with an attending rural GP joining a Christchurch cardiologist live in the operating theatre as he prepared to insert a cardiac stent into a patient.
